Hi Oliver,
Usage of the Vodafone Betavine API (the first version of which will hopefully be launched in the next few weeks) will be controlled by a credit system, where credits are rewarded to users who sign up on the site. We are looking at mechanisms to award users extra credit for certain levels of site activity. This will mean we can control the level of access without directly charging users. Pete Once we have launched, more information on the API will be available from the Vodafone Betavine API homepage |

I just read the API 'Terms and Conditions':
"Vodafone grants You a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, royalty-free and limited licence (without the right to sub-license) to use the API for the Duration for your personal and non-commercial testing, development, use and/or evaluation of Relevant Applications" So basically they cut out the aggregator so developers may create and test their SMS/MMS/LBS applications. My question is: When an application is ready to be commericalized... then what? How do we reach you? Will you reach out to the developer? Will this API be available 'Commerically'? Have any commerical terms been established so that a sustainable business model can be developed as well? |

Hi riche127,
A very good question! Clearly, Vodafone Betavine is a non commercial website aimed to encourage collaborative innovation around mobile and web communications ... however, we do have links into the commercial departments of Vodafone. The short answer to your question is that we are still working this out ... The slightly longer answer is that we would like to see some tangible examples of promising applications or mashups to help work out the commercialisation path. We would be very happy to work with you, or any other API user, on this. Steve |

Hi,
Interesting response but - not exactly very clear. I think you should have a clear path for commercializing applications / use of the API's. Where the exact same API's are available from the commercial side and at a known cost. Obviously there is some gap where Vodafone will want to take on (good / interesting) projects - with an aim to profit from them (as they will do anyway). Any comments on that? Many thanks, Dean Taylor |

Agreed, a clear path is needed.
We have an MMS widget built already... however I am not going to dedicate resources to integrate Bvine when other development options are much less restrictive and have a clear route to market. I would be happy to submit our MMS Widget to the Vodafone Betavine team, but I do not want to submit it to the community since we are billed per message. How I go about doing this is unclear. What I should expect in response is unclear. If you like what you see, whats the turnaround for commericalization? Is it worth the effort at such an early stage of Bvine for the professional? |
