Betavine 2.0 goes live!

We've just released version 2.0 of betavine.net. In December we decided to re-write the whole platform using standard open source components. This gives us greater flexibility, allowing us to develop new site features for you to use.

Please note that we still have some final data migration to complete and therefore some functionality such as download counts may not be correct for a day so - please bear with us whilst we complete these final steps - thanks.

Betavine now linked to Vodafone Live! Spain

We are pleased to announce the first of a series steps we are taking to help promote Betavine apps to a wider audience. As of lunchtime today, there is now a link to betavine.mobi in the Applications area on Vodafone Live! in Spain. This is a fantastic opportunity that opens up Betavine to over 16 million mobile users! If this proves popular we hope to link with other countries in the near future.

The homepage displayed to users accessing the site from Vodafone Live! contains a set of 'Featured Applications'. If you would like to showcase your application via this channel, please email webmaster@betavine.net.

Betavine Hosts Vodafone Apps

Vodafone Global are launching a suite of applications that work on a range of phones. Due to the way apps are hosted, and our inbuilt feedback and deployment system they have chosen Betavine to partner with.

Why not have a look at some of the apps!

New Betavine website release now live!

We are pleased to announce that the latest release of Betavine has now gone live. This release includes a number of fixes and improvements based on the feedback we’ve received from the Betavine community. Some highlights include:
The list of Latest Apps on the homepage is now updated when files are added to an App Profile. Previously this was only updated when an App Profile was created

- We have now included a Betavine search at the top of each page of the site. This should hopefully make finding the services and information we offer easier

We hope you enjoy this latest release – as always, any feedback via the forums is appreciated!

vodafone mc950d ubuntu hsdpa
Hello,
I´ve got a mc950d running on Ubuntu 7.10 with the latest deb package of the betavine driver running (vodafone germany).

The Problem is that there is no hsdpa available on Linux, only UMTS speed. The machine is dualboot with XP, here I´ve got no problems with hsdpa and fast downloads, only Ubuntu is slow.

Other dial in methods like wvdial and umtsmon also just deliver UMTS speed. The same thing is already tested with other computers.

dl speed xp:
approx. 250 KB/s

dl speed Ubuntu:
approx. 60KB/s

Is this a known problem of the drivers, are there any packages missing, Ubuntu incompatibility or a driver configuration problem? Maybe you can provide the right values for germany?

Thanks

Hi,

we have not tested the drivers with this make of card. The driver has been tested out on:

In Spain
--------

Huawei E220 (USB)
Huawei E620 (PCMCIA)(*1)
Option GlobeTrotter 3G+ EMEA (PCMCIA)

In UK
--------
Huawei E170 (USB -Stick)
Huawei E220 (USB)

You are our first to use this product with the driver that we know about! I tried to buy the version you have from our Vodafone retail shop and they do not stock this card.

Where did you purchase the card from? I will talk to my Spanish colleges and inquire how to go about some simple testing and debugging for the drivers.

Can you tell me the version of driver you used?

Kind regards, Nicholas Herriot.

Hi,

i have the same device and OS, but from a different provider - TMobile Austria.
My Problem is pretty much the same, it never gets over 500 kbit/s. Another problem is, that it is necessary to plugoff and plugin the device every time i reboot.

Both issues only happen with Vodafone Betavine and Ubuntu. On Windows everything is working fine.

I am using Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux 1.99.17

Would be very nice if anyone could help me/us to fix that.

Thanks, Thomas

Hi again,

i just read it is propably usbserial that doesn't support bigger speed.
I found something that should help for kernel 2.6.17 but mine is 2.6.22. HSDPA Speed - Ubuntu 6-10

Any ideas how to fix that with my kernel?

Kind regards,

Thomas

Ok i am finally surfing the net with HSDPA-Speed (1312 kbit/s according to speedtest.net) :-)

It was really the fault of usbserial. To solve the problem a had to modify the airprime.c file of the link i posted before. I just added the vendor- and product-id
of my device.
All other speps are the same as descripted in the link.

Hi all,

=> the driver Version I use is:
vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver
-for-linux_1.99.17_i386.deb

Yesterday I saw that there is a special gutsy driver (vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver
-for-linux_1.0_gutsy_i386.deb), but this didnt work.

The 1.99.17 driver works like this:
when I insert the mc950d the integrated cd drive does not show up (so I don´t have to remove it manually like working with wvdial), the dial in software recognises the mc950d correctly. The only bad thing: highspeed is not possible.

=> "Where did you purchase the card from?"
It came with my german vodafone contract. Here´s a link:

...Continuation

usbserial`s buffer size:

Thanks for the info Linux_Noob.

In the link you posted they say that the patch is no longer needed with ubuntu 7.04 (probably the same with 7.10), obviously it´s still necessary.

I´ll try it but I have bad experience with all those handmade stuff (at least I can install .deb packages lol).

@Nicholas Herriot
Is it possible to integrate the buffer size / airprime issue into the driver packages?

Hi,

unfortunately the patch only works temporary. After rebooting the speed is down to 500 kbit/s again, but after patching airprime again its back to fullspeed.
So i guessed it's still a problem of the betavine software and uninstalled the whole package.
Now i am using kppp and the speed problem is history.
Therefore there really must be something wrong with the betavine software.

But working with kppp had the disadvantage to eject the cdrom device evertime you plugin the usb-modem. So i also had to write a script which is started everytime the device is plugged in. I took me sometime to figure out how to manage that with udev, but finally it worked out alright :-)

It would still be nice if its possible to fix that in the mobile connect software.

king regards

Thomas

Hi guys,

I'll be taking this forward with the new software release of the card.

Thanks for the patience! As you know this is a big step by Vodafone to go the open source route and work with the Linux community.

I'll look forward to blogging about our road map next week! :-) ... Hopefully we can get a speedy update to the issues experienced.

Kind regards, Nicholas
