We are pleased to announce the launch of the second Betavine Student Competition for 2008 - the WidSets Challenge.
The WidSets Challenge is sponsored by Forum Nokia, a support program for mobile application developers working on devices manufactured by Nokia. The details of the competition can be found below.
Be sure to check out the details of our first student competition of 2008 as well - the Campus Life competition sponsored by Vodafone UK. Our Competition Guidelines provide more information about how to enter any competition on Betavine.
Please note, the end dates for both of these competitions have now been extended to the 30th May 2008.
Vodafone UK is aware of the news regarding dot mobile's financial difficulties and recent move into administration. Dot Mobile had been offering students their own tariffs and proposition, using Vodafone as the wholesale partner.
Vodafone UK have agreed to take over the sponsorship of the Campus Life student competition on Betavine. Vodafone UK are looking forward to seeing a range of quality entries for imaginative solutions as to how mobile applications can enhance campus life.
Develop an innovative mobile application using WidSets and reach a rapidly growing user base.
WidSets Challenge 2008 is open to all students from all universities, polytechnics & colleges. It is initiated by Forum Nokia and hosted by Betavine. The Challenge aims to allow students to showcase ideas and working models of their applications. The objective of the Challenge is to harness creativity and build the students' passion for innovation through mobile Web 2.0 technologies. WidSets service by Nokia is a popular consumer Internet service where users can create, publish, enjoy, and share their favorite Internet content on their mobile phones. It uses mini-applications called 'widgets' to identify updates made to the user's favorite Internet sites and pushes the content to a phone as soon as it becomes available. WidSets Scripting Language ("Helium") provides powerful Java-like environment to develop both mobile internet applications and stand-alone applications e.g. games.
Get started by following the Student Competition Guidelines 2008 instructions on How to enter a Student Competition. Register as a WidSets developer at Widsets Developer, where you can find all instructions and examples needed. Publish your creation there into the widget library. When updating your application profile on the Betavine site, just enter your widget link (as an example, http://dev.widsets.com/widget/229069/) to your developer's app description, with some supporting text of what your widget is all about.
Go to the WidSets introduction for a brief description on 'Helium Development'.

Develop an innovative mobile application or service that enhances campus life.
In recent years, mobile devices (especially mobile phones) have become an integral and indispensable part of student life. In this competition we are looking for innovative applications or services which run on these devices and enhance student life - either on campus, around town, or in residence. These applications can encompass many things, from entertainment, sports and shopping through to safety, health and the pursuit of academic excellence. They can be stand-alone or involve interaction with social networking sites, university websites, other sites or services, or even the physical world! However, we're looking for real insight - so we don't want to be in any way prescriptive.
