 Vodafone Betavine Externships

Betavine is currently not running the Externship Programme

The next Externship Programme will be advertised on the home page

The Vodafone Betavine Externship Programme is designed for students to work with Vodafone Betavine in guiding the development of future Web 2.0 projects. We want to demonstrate the possibilities of this technology on mobile devices, and are looking for people who have the right skills.  The programme offers great flexibility for you to work in your own location at times that suit you bearing in mind this is a full time role.

This role will be worked on remotely from your base location in any of the countries listed below, not in a Vodafone office. Applicants must have access to a PC and telephone as communication will take place via email and by telephone.

 Participation

One of the aims of the website is to allow Vodafone Group R&D to explore the ‘web 2.0’ ecosystem, i.e. understand the more recent uses of the web for social networking, content sharing and other forms of user interactivity. One way this is being achieved is by attracting developers to the website by providing a project and application space to allow them to develop and showcase their applications and services. The website also provides APIs to allow developers to include mobile-related functionality in their applications such as messaging.

Deliverables

This 6 month externship has been divided into 6 monthly deliverables which are as follows:

  • First Month:
A short report exploring today’s programmable ‘web 2.0’ – this short report will focus on exploring and classifying the types of services that are used in the web today, focused on the web 2.0 paradigm of social networking and user interaction. The report will also discuss and classify the different ‘entities’ that are used to deliver these services such as stand-alone applications, widgets and web-based mashups
  • Second Month:
This second deliverable will used as a foundation to design a small set of applications/services that will be developed to demonstrate a broad range of the classifications and entities explored. These will be discussed and approved with the Vodafone Betavine Team. Since the main focus of Vodafone Betavine is on mobile and web communications, this theme should be reflected in the various services designed.
  • Third Month:
The third deliverable will focus on implementing these services using the Vodafone Betavine platform to support development. This will involve creating a set of Project pages on the site to explain the applications that will be developed. As the applications are developed, it is hoped that early prototypes will be uploaded to the project space to allow the Vodafone Betavine community to test, provide feedback and help guide the development. The Vodafone Betavine API should also be utilised where appropriate to provide access to mobile specific services such as SMS and WAP Push.
  • Fourth Month:
The fourth deliverable will involve creating a page on the site that will act as an introduction and guide to other developers wanting to understand the modern, programmable web. This page will based on the work carried out in the previous deliverables and will contain links to the various project spaces created.
  • Fifth Month:
The fifth deliverable will involve collating the feedback received from the Vodafone Betavine community and the team on the applications and services developed. This will then be used to produce a set of requirements that will in turn be used to modify and further develop these applications and services. These updated versions will also be uploaded to the site for further testing. (One of the aims of this deliverable is to understand how effective Rapid Application Development (RAD) is in this context).
  • Sixth Month:
The final deliverable will be 2 short reports. The first will discuss the experiences of using Vodafone Betavine as a platform to assist software development, highlighting future improvements that could be made to the site. The second will discuss the experiences of undertaking the externship with recommendations of how this could be improved in future.
Project Outlines

The primary purpose of this role is to guide the development of Vodafone Betavine by exploring the types of web 2.0 services that developers are creating and use the Vodafone Betavine platform to develop a set of these services; demonstrating a broad range of what is possible with today’s ‘programmable’ web.

All project deliverables need to be clearly communicated to the Vodafone Betavine Team and the online Vodafone Betavine community. This communication should be undertaken in the form of written reports as well as creating and regularly updating project spaces and pages on Vodafone Betavine. Deliverables need to delivered on-time at the end of each of the 6 months of the externship. Experience of delivering reports utilising Microsoft Word or equivalent is required.

The job holder will work as part of the team, reporting to the Team Leader.
